Unintentional John Hughes Fashion Memorial

Share
On Saturday mornings, I don't think much about what I put on before I leave the house and race out to the Salvation Army to pick through the new stuff. But this morning I read the obituary on filmmaker John Hughes and I guess it stuck in my head while I got dressed.

From the top: blond(ish) hair-- was anyone else surprised the first time they saw Pretty In Pink and the cute, blond preppy boy was the villain? Vintage RayBan Wayfarer sunglasses. They're pre-90's, no logo on the side. I got them at the same Salvation Army for $2 yesterday; vintage green and white rugby shirt-- the real deal, not a mass-produced fashion item, also from the SA; straight-leg Levi's that I've had (and patched and patched) for about 10 years; not pictured: beaten Sperry Topsiders that I keep meaning to replace.

And when I got to the Salvation Army, guess what song was on the radio? "If You Leave" by OMD, from the Pretty In Pink soundtrack.

Sixteen Candles. The Breakfast Club. Weird Science. Some Kind of Wonderful. These films spoke to my teenage self and I am forever grateful.

John Hughes, R.I.P.
