THRIFT SCORE Since I got my first pair in seventh grade (about the same time I was trying to figure out whether I liked this new pop star named Madonna) I've loved a good penny loafer. We were a family on a budget, so my first pennies were from Target (before they were cool) and fit with wheat-back pennies I had from my collection. As now, I paired them with 501s and shetland sweater.
My newest pair are actually very old, old enough that the color has cracked and flaked and the leather insoles are so worn that I can't even tell who made them. The extra big slots at the front are perfect for two not-shiny gold dollars. Living large on a Salvation Army budget, just like Madonna was way back when.
