A former boss once told me after I styled a photo shoot that the women looked like drag queens. Besides the fact that she should have looked in the mirror (zing!), she was mistaking a well-dressed, mature woman who eschews trendy garbage for a female impersonator.
So no surprise that as I watch the DVD release of the TV classic Peyton Place, I'm waiting with baited breath for any scene featuring Oscar winner Dorothy Malone. Starring as repressed bookstore owner Constance MacKenzie, Malone is not only the master of eye and mouth reaction shots (Allison has been seeing a married man! Elliot Carson is back in town! Chicken or fish!), she always looks amazing in her 60's New England way.
Her hair is way blonde and seemingly flipped with soup cans, her eyes are made up to draw attention and her lips are nude. Constance's foundation garments seem to be steel-belted, since she walks with her feet no more than a foot apart. She favors sweater sets and she has one good winter coat. In other words, she is perfection.
Skip ahead to 1:50 in this clip from the show to witness Malone in her asymmetrical flip fabulousness:
