If I've accomplished nothing else, you should know by now that your first stop in London should be the TopShop/Topman megastore at Oxford Circus. They've got every trend you can imagine, some that you can't, all before the H&Ms and bennetons have caught up. So grab a cab, take your suitcase into the store with you and get shopping. You can check into your hotel later.
I always head right to the Topman shoe department. In addition to great twisted classic designs, they feature sneakers by brands we've forgotten about in the US (hello, Dunlop?) and collaborations and special collections with great classic shoemakers. Our next purchase will be these Nanny State white leather brogues. A sneaker in disguise as a dress shoe? Perfect with our Jeremy Scott tuxedo shirt.
