When I was in kindergarten, my best friend Lizzie and I had our birthdays in the same week. My mom, being of the same bargain-hunter genes as I, searched out the most unique gifts at the best price. She came up with the coolest Army-style backpacks for kids and got one for each of us so we could be matchy-matchy.
I don't remember if I got teased at school for matching with a girl (probably), but I do remember it began my obsession with bags. I carried that pack for years, until I was too big to get my arms through those kindergarten-sized straps. Thankfully, Gap has unknowingly recreated my childhood pack in overdyed canvas with minimal bells and whistles.
