Follow-Up: American Living
Finally got out to the nearest JC Penney in New Jersey to check out the much-hyped American Living collection. They really went all out. As soon as I walked in the store, I saw American Living bedding, luggage, women's handbags, men's suits and the fantastic men's sportswear collection.
The collection is as good as it looks on the web. The quality is good, the fit is good and the selection is great. However, the sizing is limited; waist sizes start at 32 and shirts at medium, although extended sizes are available online.
For a store like JCP that thrives on bargains and special offers, American Living stands out as overpriced and really conservative (compared to over-designed jeans and t-shirts that make up most of their sportswear selections). I just don't believe that a store full of screaming babies and tired middle-class Americans are really living like this collection. The upside is that everything will be on the clearance rack before you know it!
