I agree in theory with the idea that if you want a vintage look, you should wear vintage. But when was the last time you walked into the Salvation Army and found a pair of jeans as cool as these? The denim has vintaged fading and whiskering, but the cut is totally updated with a lower waist and a slimmer leg. Part of the Tommy Hilfiger 'Icon' collection, I'm choosing to ignore the obvious hubris and enjoy the pieces.

BEFORE & AFTER Since Herr Karl can't find the time to make a men's Chanel collection himself, I'll have to make my own.

The first step is a pair of classic men's shoes. Whenever I find vintage Florsheim wingtips in my size, I buy them-- they're built like tanks and comfortable. The second step is a decoration. In this case, I saw a display of women's shoe clips that I remembered the Chanel-esque clip-on earrings I had squirreled away. Lastly, my crafty mind darted to the bronze spray paint I just bought on clearance and the whole thing came together. My partner says that the Chanel is "too much," which means they're perfect.

Now if I only had a place to wear them besides Home Depot.

Since moving to a warmer climate with fewer crazy taxi drivers, I've been thinking about getting a bike. I can't afford to get a car, I don't have a driver's license yet anyway and I'm trying my best to be eco-friendly whenever possible. So maybe a bike. Maybe.

I was just on urbanoutfitters.com and came across their collaboration with Republic where you can customize the basic 'Aristotle' model bike, kind of a glorified beach cruiser, in all sorts of colors. Put it all together online so you can see the results and their busy bike builders get started on it two days later.

Since this is Florida, I went for an Art Deco-inspired palette of putty, aqua, white and silver. But the price tag of $400 is giving me pause. Maybe I'll keep looking at yard sales.

I can't deny that a few sacrifices have been made in leaving the Big Apple behind for the warmer climates of Florida. One of the biggest (as far as my closet is concerned) is the great sales that only happen in the fashion capital.

One of my favorites is the seasonal Gant sale, where classic and contemporary preppy styles can be had for pennies on the dollar. Seriously, the stuff is great and I always left with at least two shopping bags filled. Its one of the few sales that I wholly endorse. I'm guessing there won't be anything from the Michael Bastian collection, but you can always hope.

LL Bean Signature Saltwash Canvas Backpack

I was lucky enough to get a sneak-peek at the fall LL Bean Signature collection a few months ago and immediately zeroed-in on this military-inspired (without the musty stink of the real thing) backpack.

Constructed of hardy 26oz canvas that's washed for softness and finished with leather straps, it will make for a great airplane or ferry boat carry-on alternative. The interior (lined in preppy plaid) is roomy enough to stack a week's worth of gear and the outside pockets are big enough to hold a bunch of 2oz bottles, my iPod and Kindle.

When we hit the runway, it's on my back and and I'm gone without struggling with a handle or broken wheels of a traditional roller suitcase. Also comes in black if you're too cool for school.

This is another collaboration that feel right. Michael Bastian's menswear collections have always been right-on in capturing the classic preppy spirit in a contemporary way that guys will actually want to wear. The only problem is that the prices are so jaw-dropping as to place even a basic polo out of reach of most of us.

Bastian's new collection for Gant is heavy on quality but low(er) on price. Personally, I still find a knit tie at $145 and a polo shirt at $115 obnoxiously out of touch with the new consumer reality, but I suppose that's emblematic of the preppy spirit. When the whole kit and kaboodle inevitably goes on sale, I may grab a few things.

As you've probably figured out, I have a minor obsession with iconic brands and Levi's would be at the top of my list. And although I'm weary of designer collaborations, which often end up as crap with a high-end label, I'm excited about the new Levi's Workwear by Filson range because it's such an ideal marriage.

Basically, Filson products are remade in Levi's denim and Levi's products are remade in Filson tin cloth and rugged twill. Simple perfection. I'm going for one of the classic Filson bags in denim, which I'm sure will age to an amazing patina.

From the July 15 "Critical Shopper" column by Jon Caramanica in the New York Times.

"Khakis are the dress pants of the uncertain, a compromise between comfort and rigor, insouciance and dignity. Worn correctly, khakis should solve all of life's problems. Mostly, though, they're just masks, something we put on when we're scared to try harder."

I think that sums up a major problem not only with the way men think about clothing and fashion, but our American society, as well.

I could (and have) talked at length about counterfeits, knock-offs and "inspired by," the last being the way that established designers steal the designs of others in a legitimate (by legal standards) way. In my book, a fake is a fake is a fake no matter who makes it.

The new and poorly named Lands' End Canvas "Canvas Parka Jacket" (left) is one such item, a nearly identical knock-off of the Belstaff Trialmaster jacket (right). You'll see it in the September women's magazines ads with the equally dull copy "Authentic inspiration. Modern interpretation. What will you make of it?"

Answer: yes, inspired by the authentic, interpreted in the modern, nothing-is-new way, and what I make of it is that it's not as good as the original.

This is a knock-off.

In general, I don't like cutesy when it comes to interior design, and modern style can be just as gag-inducing as a handpainted goose mailbox or a repurposed toilet seat. In fact, a lot of what's on the Crate 'n' Barrel off-shoot cb2.com is too precious, too intentional, too obvious.

But I have a soft spot for the new Alpha floor lamp, an out-sized replica of those ubiquitous 80's desk lamps that lit my evenings of mix-tape making and essay writing. A tongue-in-cheek idea, but the design being mocked is still perfection.

In case you didn't know, I thrift. I thrift a lot. I'm the FourSquared mayor of a lot of the thrift stores. I know the workers by name and sometimes bring them doughnuts. I thrift a lot.

There's good thrift weeks and bad thrift weeks. This was a good week. Here's a photo I did of the good stuff I kept for myself. Vintage pink Guatemala shorts, Chaps Ralph Lauren 80's tuxedo shirt, Hermes silk scarf (inside the shirt), Harris Tweed herringbone jacket, vintage eyeglass frames, vintage Lands' End Outrigger bag. It really sticks in my craw (grandpa used to say that) when I see products like this that take advantage of a basic lack of customer knowledge. Basic white canvas tote bags like this have been around for years (thanks, LL Bean) and this particular style can be found at most art supply stores, intended to haul around paints and canvases.

The designers at the otherwise great style blog A Continuous Lean took a standard painter's tote, added a rugged zipper, some screenprint to the inside and a hefty price tag of $145. The Duluth Trading Co version comes in the same rugged canvas with a riveted bottom and open top for $22.50. I'm sure you have a lot of thinking to do before making your purchase.

There's nothing clever about this. It's a travel adapter, so that you don't blow out your iPhone plugging it in wherever the plugs and voltage aren't American standard. They usually run about $30 for the whole kit at places like the Container Store.

But, if you're just itching to spend nearly $500 for the add-on of a bright pink case and the YSL logo printed on the side, you're in luck.

Seriously, this is totally what's wrong with our way of thinking and our economy. This isn't fashion, this isn't irony, this is nothing but greed playing on stupid fashion people. The YSL executives who approved this should be tarred and feathered.

I've been a Lego freak from as far back as I can remember (buy me a gin 'n' tonic and I'll explain how I built a working Lego telephone when I was 12) and my interest in the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright is nearly as old.

Now these two influences (two me, at least) have converged in a new master series of Lego Architecture kits recreating iconic Wright structures like the Guggenheim Museum and Fallingwater.

The folks at Bean and I are on the same wavelength. Anticipating my move to a warmer climate, I've been tailoring down some of my favorite pants to shorts, with a shorter above-the-knee 6" inseam. I figure, I have the legs and if they're shorts, they should be short.

Here's my problems with the growing trend of men wearing their jeans as such. A) You're a man. There's stuff down there that's getting suffocated. B) I'm all for starving yourself for fashion (not really; maybe) but when I can see your pelvic bones through a layer of denim, you've gone too far. C) Tight jeans make you walk funny.

Hey kids! Its time for some pseudo-legal fashion fun! Just ask your mom if it's okay first!

• To start, create a stencil of your favorite I-can-never-afford-this brand logo. I chose the double-Cs of Chanel I cut off an old bag (purse, that is; not an old lady).

• Second, find a t-shirt or sweatshirt that fits you comfortably. I used a washed cotton Gap sweater.

• Third, pick a spray paint color that contrasts with the color of your garment. I chose metallic silver.

• To complete, lay the garment flat on the ground where you get plenty of ventilation-- its gonna stink! Center (or not, it's your choice) the stencil and spray away! I started with white paint to ground the design and then did a layer of silver. Don't worry if it looks a little sloppy-- that's the point!

• Let dry for an hour, remove stencil and violá! A crafty solution to your fashion budget problems.

Don't you hate when retailers dress something up as other than what it really is? I just got an email from Urban Outfitters touting their $5 sale like it's some big crazy fashion mind-blow. But when I actually maneuvered to the men's section, I found a total of three items under $5-- and two of them were socks.

But every cloud has a silver lining. The UO folks finally marked down their criminally overpriced Brothers Bray weekender bag, designed by the folks at Billy Kirk. Still not a great bargain for the faux-leather trim and cut-rate canvas, but I'm in a shopping mood.

Having made the decision to move on to a warmer climate this Fall, I've been busily ridding myself of my beloved but now obsolete Winter wardrobe. I don't have too many complaints about life in general. I have what I need to get by and I've outgrown the need to have the newest, latest and most expensive. But sometimes I still find something outrageously out of reach that makes me drool.

It was love at first sight when I came across the new black Rolexes by Alejandro Alcocer. Already known for his design work, Alcocer took it a step further when he acquired a bunch of vintage Rolexes and had them painted a durable matte black. Though this is not officially sanctioned by Rolex, I can't help but feel that their designers are now working on a similar project.

In an agnostic (to put it mildly) family like mine, pseudo-religious holidays were just excuses to partake in our three favorite past times: shopping, drinking and gossiping. The kids got new outfits we hated, Grandma poured a round of rum and Cokes (easy on the Coke) and everyone sat around and ripped whoever wasn't there. Its what Jesus would have wanted.

I'm not a fan of the way the men's J. Crew selection has become a trend bazaar. Instead of creating their own takes on popular items, J. Crew is just selling whatever's hot right now, slightly tweaked for exclusivity claims, and marked up high.

Take their constant, boring collaboration with Sperry. New to the group is a broken-in chino version of the timeless Top-Sider Original. Meh, but okay. Someone will want it. But compare the prices-- this chino (aka cotton) version is $118-- $20 more than the classic leather version.

I picked up this cotton canvas and chambray tote in the ladies department, but I think it has a rugged, masculine look. The straps are long enough for the shoulder and short enough not to drag the bag on the ground if you carry by hand. I'm going to rough mine up and maybe paint something on it.
